THE PHENOMENON

Stone

The word stone comes from the Indo-Germanic root stai which means coagulated, condensed or to become solid. A stone is something condensed, created through a process.

The beauty of a stone is exposed when the casing, ugly and dirty, is opened and the core is exposed.

Stone is a symbol for immortality, the unconquerable, eternity, continuity. Even though man has always collected stones, their secrets are locked away, inaccessible.

Stone is always under our feet. Under the asphalt, the tar and the sand, lies the stone, the rock.

Sound

Sound is not an element like fire or water. It is an invisible substance found in everything and it occupies human hearing. Sound and its time dimension, rhythm, are the phenomena which create life and hold it together. Without vibration and pulsation, inwardly and outwardly, no life is possible, neither human nor material.

The world is sound, Nada Brahma. In ancient times, people thought the universe “sang”, and the music of the planets was described as spherical harmony, as Music of the Spheres. This theory, applied to the human voice and was called human music. At the lowest level, this music found its expression in instruments, instrumental music.

Stone and  sound

Stone is not dead. Nor is it there just to build streets and buildings or to be sculpted. Stone lives the way all matter lives: both vibrate. The inner molecular structures vibrate and this sound, within the matter, is expressible and unique to the specific matter. Although matter holds the possibility of expression, the inhabitants of this planet are needed to make this sound audible.

Although other stones may also prove appropriate, we have culled sound bodies from marble, travertine, serpentine, and granite. They have been coaxed to life by hands and fingers stroking them in special ways. No two stones are alike, each has its own sound potential. The uniqueness of each stone must be worked out and recognized as the prerequisite for developing the stone, a process that can take many months, even years.

Water, stone and sound

The elements water and stone are very closely related in the history of Earth´s origins. The two are the major components of our planet, both in liquid and solid form. Each stone contains water which it releases only many years after being removed from Nature´s processes.

At the same time, water is the greatest enemy of stone. If water penetrates a stone and freezes, the stone can crack or burst. If it flows over a stone continuously, as happens in every stream and river, the stone is gradually eroded. The stone becomes sand, sand becomes dust.

On the other hand, water is essential to play the stone. It covers the stone like a thin film, removing the hardness. Water softens the hands and fingers, making them pliable. The prerequisites are then in place to develop the stone´s sound. No force is required.

The stone´s sound holds the Earth´s memory.
